Recently when I was in Puerto Vallarta for a wedding I gave myself the task of creating poems about my images either in the style of Rumi or in a Haiku. The first day alone on the beach Rumi’s poem “Don’t Go Back to Sleep” came to me very strongly.
I related it to the parasailers taking off for a different world in the sky. Seeing all the possibilities of other worlds on that beach became a Giant Whoosh of creativity. The Earth and the Sky. The Beach and the Sea. What happens at the intersection where the two worlds touch? Nothing is permanent.
Don’t Go Back to Sleep
The Breeze at dawn has secrets to tell
Don’t go back to sleep
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the door sill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
